When school’s out, fun is in—but for too many kids, so is the dreaded summer slide. That drop in reading skills and learning momentum over the break is all too real. And it hits hardest for young readers from underserved communities.

But here’s the good news: Combating the summer slide doesn’t have to feel like school. In fact, it can look a lot like summer itself—sunshine, play, laughter, and books that reflect our kids.

As a children’s book author and mom, I believe summer reading should be:

✔️ Fun

✔️ Culturally affirming

✔️ Easy to connect with

✔️ Centered on joy, movement, and curiosity

That’s why I created these four books—each one written with summer fun and educational impact in mind:

1. My Summer Skin is Radiant

This joyful story follows a boy and girl as they take on summer: bike rides, sprinklers, hopscotch, water balloon fights, and more. The message? If our kids had fun this summer, their skin should show it. This book not only encourages reading, but also builds confidence and challenges colorism in a subtle, powerful way.

2. Sonny Vibes Summer

Meet Sonny, your child’s new summer BFF! He’s flying kites, chowing down at cookouts, learning about longer days and sunshine, and soaking up every bit of what makes summer magical. It’s packed with facts, rhythm, and imagination—perfect for reinforcing reading skills while celebrating the season.

3. Sammy the Good Sport & 4. Samantha the Good Sport

Summer is also sports camps, rec leagues, and team-building time—and these two stories help young athletes learn the value of sportsmanship, teamwork, and integrity. Ideal for summer programs and reading circles that want a message with heart and life skills.

Why These Books Work for Summer Reading

They’re engaging. They’re relatable. They’re built for K–3 readers. And most importantly, they keep the reading momentum going—without feeling like “schoolwork.”

These are the stories that get kids to choose to read, and that’s where the real magic happens.
